Sigiriya

Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock) is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. The site is surrounded by the remnants of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other architectural structures, reflecting the grandeur of its historical design. Sigiriya is renowned for its ancient frescoes, which are strikingly similar to the famous paintings in India’s Ajanta Caves. The fortress was constructed during the reign of King Kassapa I (AD 477–495) and remains one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Today, Sigiriya is also recognized as one of the country’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
