Colombo

Colombo

The name “Colombo,” first introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, is believed to have originated from the classical Sinhalese term “Kolon Thota,” meaning “port on the Kelani River.” Another widely accepted interpretation links the name to “Kola-amba-thota,” meaning “harbour with leafy mango trees.” Thanks to its natural harbor and strategic location along the East–West maritime trade routes, Colombo was known to ancient traders over 2,000 years ago. Despite its long trading history, Colombo was officially established as the capital of Sri Lanka in 1815, when the island came under British rule. The city retained its capital status following independence in 1948. In 1978, with the relocation of administrative functions to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Colombo was designated the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Today, Colombo stands as a dynamic metropolis, blending colonial heritage, modern development, and cultural diversity, and serves as the country’s main hub for commerce, finance, and international trade.
