Beruwela

Beruwela

Beruwela is a charming resort town located along the southwestern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, known for its scenic beaches and rich cultural heritage. The name Beruwela is derived from the Sinhalese phrase meaning “the place where the sail is lowered,” reflecting its historical importance as an early harbor for seafarers. Beruwela is historically significant as the site of the first Muslim settlement in Sri Lanka, established by Arab traders around the 8th century AD. Today, the town is home to a large community of Sri Lankan Moors, many of whom are traditionally engaged in the gem trade, particularly in the area known as China Fort. One of Beruwela’s most prominent landmarks is the Masjid-ul-Abrar, the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka. Built by early Arab traders, the mosque is situated on a rocky peninsula overlooking the town and stands as a powerful symbol of Beruwela’s long-standing Islamic heritage.
