Sinharaja

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a pristine national park and one of Sri Lanka’s most ecologically significant sites. Recognized for its global importance, it has been designated both a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site. This hilly, virgin rainforest is part of the Sri Lanka lowland rainforests ecoregion and was largely spared from commercial logging due to its inaccessibility. The reserve was officially declared a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. Its name, Sinharaja, translates to “Kingdom of the Lion”, reflecting the forest’s majestic and untouched natural beauty.
