Kitulgala
Kitulgala is a small yet vibrant town located in the western region of Sri Lanka, nestled within the country’s lush wet-zone rainforest. Receiving rainfall from two monsoon seasons each year, Kitulgala is recognized as one of the wettest areas in Sri Lanka. Despite this, the town becomes especially lively during the first three months of the year, with February being the driest and most popular time to visit. Kitulgala gained international recognition as a filming location for the Academy Award-winning movie The Bridge on the River Kwai, which was shot along the scenic Kelani River. While the original bridge no longer exists, visitors can still see the remaining concrete foundations near the riverbank. Today, Kitulgala is best known as a premier destination for adventure tourism, particularly white-water rafting. Rafting excursions typically begin a few kilometres upstream on the Kelani River, offering thrilling experiences amid stunning rainforest surroundings.
